HOW TO GROW TOMATOES , HACKS FOR INCREASING PRODUCTION AND NUTRITIVE VALUE

TOMATOES EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

Family - Solanacae

Botanical name - Solanum lycopersicum

Chromosome number- 2n = 24

Origin -  Peru , Bolivia and Ecuador

Food value - rich source vitamin A and C  , tomato adds variety of colour to the food .Tomato acts as a good appetiser and its its soup is a good remedy for the relief from constipation . LYCOPENE imparts red colour to tomato and is a powerful antioxidant and has anti-cancerous properties .

Varieties - tomato can be classified into 3 diff varieties or categories

  1. determinate - inflorescence( occurring of flower) occur after every inter-node until the growth ceases , these are suitable to areas with short growing period .
  2. indeterminate - It require longer growing season , simultaneous growth of the stem with flowering or inflorescence occur , need to be trained due to their high vegetative nature .

Climate -  tomatoes are warm season crop and highly sensitive to frost . Day temperature of 25 to 30 °C and night temperature of  15- 20 °C are optimum for growth and fruit setting .Optimum temperature for germination is 24 °C

Soil - can be grown in a variety of soils .A well drained fertile loam soil with pH range from 6.0-7.0 is well suited

Sowing -   usually raising of tomato seeding is done  and are  transplanted after the danger of frost has ended in your area , tomatoes are usually transplanted in raised beds .

Spacing -  spacing between the plants is very important factor to in crease the yield

  1. determinate type - as the population density of determinate tomatoes is less as compared to indeterminate hence less spacing is required , the  bed * plant spacing should be 100cm*30cm
  2. indeterminate - bed * plant spacing should  be 150 cm*30cm

Irrigation - watering should be done just after transplanting of seedlings and normally at 3 to 4 day interval through the growing seasons , usually drip irrigation system is preferred for increasing water use efficiency .

Uses of mulches - mulching can be done to control weeds  and avoid rotting of fruit by preventing its contact with the soil , mulching help retain soil moisture  , preventing diseases and nutrient loss through leaching , mulching can be done with black polythene sheets or  agriculture waste like sugarcane trash or  rice straw can be used as a mulch.

Hacks - to improve fruit yield spray the flower with 4 - chlorophenoxy acetic acid (CPS) @ 50 mg / hectare of land . training should be done in indeterminate type of tomatoes to in crease fruit size , prevents rotting  and ease spraying and harvesting .  tomatoes are trained upright with the help of metal wire hung with a support .
